The world we live in now is vastly different than it was, even just 20 some years ago. Sincerity and good moral lessons aren't enough of a hook anymore, so stories and characters always have to be a joke, always have to be ironic, always have to be dunking on someone else for the punchline.
Just keep ignoring the modern day ragebait trash remakes, it does go away eventually.
